June 24, 2025 — The Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Optometrists (NLAO) is pleased to share exciting news: the provincial government has officially announced enhanced vision care coverage under the Income Support Program, effective September 1, 2025.

This announcement follows ongoing advocacy by the NLAO to increase access to essential eye care services for vulnerable populations across the province. We’re proud to see this important step forward.

Beginning this fall, individuals receiving income support will now have access to:

  • Up to $100 for eye exams

  • $290 for prescription glasses

  • $350 for bifocals

These changes represent a significant improvement in vision care access for low-income individuals and families in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Vision care is healthcare. These updated benefits will help ensure more people can access the eye exams and corrective lenses they need. Vision care supports better health, learning, employment, and quality of life.

The NLAO has long advocated for equitable access to eye care, and we commend the provincial government for recognizing the importance of vision in overall well-being.

We will continue working with partners and policymakers to ensure that no Newfoundlander or Labradorian is left behind when it comes to eye health. This announcement is a positive and meaningful step forward: for our patients, our communities, and our profession.
